New EU Packaging Requirements: PPWR at a Glance
The new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) creates more harmonised rules for packaging design, recyclability, reuse, and waste prevention in Europe. You should already start documenting your packaging optimisation measures today.
The PPWR is generally set to apply from 12 August 2026, although many specific obligations will be introduced in stages.
For companies in the kitchen industry, this means reviewing packaging, materials, supply chains, and supporting documentation at an early stage.
Higher recycling requirements, reduced material use, and the improved return of packaging into the materials cycle will become particularly important in the future.
Existing obligations, such as system participation, licensing, and documentation of evidence, will initially remain relevant and must be considered together with the new EU requirements.
